Description

The Bee Conservancy’s Beginner Beekeeper Program

The Bee Conservancy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting bees, safeguarding the environment, and securing food justice through community-based education, research, habitat creation, and advocacy.

The Bee Conservancy is offering three scholarships to eCornell's Beekeeping Essentials Course in February 2023. These scholarships will be awarded to aspiring/beginner beekeepers with little or no beekeeping experience whose work advances environmental stewardship, food justice, or education.

While proper beekeeping training can be inaccessible and costly, it is crucial for the health of honey bee hives and local ecosystems, as bees pollinate 80% of the world’s flowering plants — including one in three bites of food that we eat. This program will provide the needed education for aspiring beekeepers, who in turn, can use their new skills to advance educational, food justice, or environmental goals at their local organizations.

This program was made possible through a donation from Texas Roadhouse.

Awardees of this program will receive:
  • Tuition and enrollment in eCornell’s Beekeeping Essentials, , online, 5-week instructor-led course to be taken February 1st - March 7th, 2023, at no cost to the recipient.
  • Gain knowledge on: honey bee biology, the fundamentals of beekeeping, how to start/observe/support hives, and problem solving. By the end of the course, you should feel ready to house honey bee hives of your own.
  • Mentorship from The Bee Conservancy’s certified Master Beekeepers.

Scholarship awardees are required to:
  • Complete approximately 3-5 hours of coursework per week, for the duration of the course.
  • Receive a passing grade (at least 90%) on the course’s 14 quizzes.
  • Complete a final project as part of the course.
  • Attend periodic community meetings with TBC’s master beekeepers and other awardees.
  • Share details of their beekeeping story and course experience with TBC, to be included on channels of TBC and the program sponsor, Texas Roadhouse.
  • Sign a media release form.
A Beekeeping Essentials Certificate from Cornell University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will be awarded to individuals who successfully pass the course.

The deadline to submit your application is October 31st.
